Denotation and Connotation

The Wateraid print advert communicates meaning to an audience through the use of a symbolic media code. The symbol of the child being sad is being used to draw audience attention to the anchorage text . The use of the phrase "Dig toilets Not graves" could connote that this famine is ruining peoples lives. The producer’s message could be to communicate that this is quite devastating and their advertisement techniques are quite convincing.
